Omega European Masters 2017: Matthew Fitzpatrick Beats Scott Hend in Play-Off

Omega European Masters 2017: Matthew Fitzpatrick Beats Scott Hend in Play-Off

The Australian came into the week looking for redemption after losing to Alex Noren in a play-off in Crans Montana last season, and he held a four-shot lead shortly after a two-hour-and-26-minute delay due to fog in the Swiss Alps.

The unusual start to the day did not affect Fitzpatrick, who eventually fired a six-under 64 to finish on 14-under at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Switzerland.

However, the Australian still leads holds a two-shot lead over the chasing pack which is now led by South Africa's Darren Fichardt, England's Matthew Fitzpatrick and Paraguayan Fabrizio Zanotti who are all at nine-under-par.

But world number 48 Fitzpatrick, 23, looked to have carved out a tournament-winning lead as a trio of birdies on the back nine put him two clear with two holes remaining.

"It was all calm when we started but after we went back, it was just so cold out there", Hend told www.europeantour.com. Everyone was dropping shots.

Marcus Fraser produced his lowest score in signing for a 66, and that included an 18 hole birdie for a third day running, to end his round at eight-under par and then share of fifth place at eight-under par.

Hend battled in the testing conditions and despite being two over on the day, his nearest rivals' rounds meant his lead lengthened.

He then hit the grandstand from the bunker at the third playoff hole and saw his next chip finish inches from the water on his way to a bogey-five.

However, Hend returned looking shaky for a first time all week and after bogeys at the fourth and eighth holes he continued to wobble with back-to-back bogeys at 11 and 12.

Burmester had three bogeys and a single blemish in a 68, with South African Sterne and Swede Björk left with three holes to complete and Jaidee playing the 14th alongside Zanotti.
