SC governor says Irma to cause localized damage

SC governor says Irma to cause localized damage

A total of 11 shelters have opened across the state and as of noon on Sunday, 264 evacuees were making use of them.

Governor McMaster has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Florida Governor Rick Scott that will provide assistance from first responders, law enforcement and other agencies here in SC.

Governor McMaster says what worries him the most is the wind and flooding potential to hurt people and destroy property.

"There will be no other evacuations for other counties", McMaster said.

During a news conference Saturday afternoon in which Gov. Henry McMaster and other state officials participated, no additional evacuations were added to the ones ordered by McMaster for coastal barrier islands.

Irma made landfall Sunday morning at 9:10 a.m.in the Florida Keys and is expected to make landfall on the Florida Peninsula somewhere between Fort Myers and Tampa Sunday night.

McMaster said that there will be "no tolerance" for anyone who tries to take advantage of those who evacuated, and more than 100 National Guardsmen and law enforcement officers will patrol evacuated areas to be sure homes and businesses are safe.

He said a storm surge warning has been issued for Charleston County.

There will be a total of 23 shelters open around the state by the end of Sunday, with a total capacity of 13,000.

"District administrators will continue monitoring the course of Hurricane Irma and work in collaboration with emergency management officials to evaluate projections and conditions throughout the weekend and Monday", the press release stated.

County offices along with city of Georgetown offices will be closed Monday except for essential personnel. Says the Midlands can expect high winds and rain.

South Carolina's interstate system has seen an influx of vehicles during the past two days.

"Irma will likely bring periods of heavy rain to much of Georgia, South Carolina, and western North Carolina early next week", the NHC said, "All areas seeing heavy rainfall from Irma will experience a risk of flooding and flash flooding".

Any order would correspond to lane reversals on several major highways, including Interstate 26 between Charleston and Columbia, meaning they would allow only out-bound traffic.

However, store shelves should be restocked by now, and brand-name gas stations also have a steady supply of fuel. They are on their way to help partners in Florida and Georgia. North Carolina transportation officials are working with their counterparts in Georgia and SC to coordinate evacuation traffic.

Are any shelters open locally?
