Tony Blair calls for European Union migration curbs to avoid Brexit

Tony Blair calls for European Union migration curbs to avoid Brexit

"Leaving the European Union means freedom of movement has to end whether we like it or not..."

Asked about Blair's proposals, Defense Minister Michael Fallon said the government had to get on with delivering Brexit. "If they don't - I accept it goes forward", he said.

"If we put this case to people, maybe they will listen".

"There is no diversion possible from Brexit without addressing the grievances that gave rise to it. Paradoxically, we have to respect the referendum vote to change it", Blair, who has said Brexit can and should be stopped, wrote in the Sunday Times newspaper.

"And the risk is actually that we have a Brexit followed by, I'm afraid, an unreconstructed leftist programme from Labour, and if you combine those two things together in my view we will be in a very serious situation as a country".

On controlling European immigration, the former PM said there were ways to do it that "don't mean you have to do Brexit" like new restrictions such as implementing an emergency brake on the number of people coming in. "There are answers to the anger, there are answers on tuition fees, on social injustice, on communities left behind".

"There can be no change to Brexit unless we confront the underlying causes of it", Blair said, conceding that the referendum vote showed a widespread feeling that unchecked immigration was forcing wages down, straining public services, and - particularly when it involves conservative Muslims - raising questions of cultural integration.

Many Brexit supporters blame Blair's government, which allowed citizens of former communist states to settle immediately in Britain despite a long transition period implemented by other European Union countries, for a big influx of European Union migrants from 2004. "But the real point is that the times were different; the sentiment was different; and intelligent politics takes account of such change", Blair said. Blair warns the Labour party that it should back tougher measures to avoid being painted "as the open borders party" and says party leader Jeremy Corbyn should start "making the case against" Brexit.

Meanwhile, Ken Clarke, the Europhile former Tory Chancellor, said it was "hopeless" to expect the United Kingdom to stay in the EU.

Pro-EU Conservative Ken Clarke told Sky News it was "hopeless" to think the United Kingdom could stay in the EU, given the "mood of the country".
