Hamas Leadership Meets in Cairo

Hamas Leadership Meets in Cairo

Senior Islamic Hamas movement leaders were discussing the internal Palestinian reconciliation with high-ranking Egyptian security intelligence officials in Cairo, a Hamas official said Monday.

For the first time since Hamas's new leadership was elected four months ago, the terror group's leaders gathered on Sunday from around the Middle East to have their first face-to-face meeting. It is unclear whether the issue of the three Israeli citizens held captive by the terror group was addressed during Saturday's meeting with Egyptian officials.

Hamas leader heads to Cairo to discuss "mechanisms to ease Gaza's siege", in first such visit since his election in May.

Abbas sought through the measure to secure Hamas's relinquish of Gaza.

Haniyeh had arrived to Egypt early on Saturday in his first trip overseas following the Hamas general elections.

For much of the last decade, Egypt has joined Israel in enforcing a crippling blockade that has deprived the enclave's roughly two million inhabitants of most basic commodities, including food, fuel and medicine.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said the talks with Egypt will focus on alleviating the blockade and mending a longstanding rift with rival group Fatah, headed by Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Gaza Strip has seven border crossings linking it to the outside world.

Hamas has always been accused by the Egyptian government of aiding the brutal Islamic insurgency in Egypt's restive North Sinai region, but in recent months, Hamas has beefed up security along Gaza's southern border with Egypt, seeking to assure Cairo that it is fighting IS sympathizers. Hamas wants this reconciliation to pass through Egypt to guarantee a better improvement in the relations with Cairo.
