How Sinai Province's persistent attempts to penetrate Cairo have failed

How Sinai Province's persistent attempts to penetrate Cairo have failed

Egyptian police say they killed 10 suspected militants in a shoot-out near Cairo Sunday.

The firefight began when security forces approached the two apartments after a tip-off that militants were holed up there, the officials said.

The violence erupted during simultaneous raids by police early Sunday at two adjacent flats used as hideouts by "terrorists" in a heavily populated district in the city of Giza, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. In recent years there has also been a wave of attacks, mainly targeting security forces, blamed on a splinter faction of Morsi's banned Muslim Brotherhood group. That was the deadliest attack in two years. That was followed by an exchange of gunfire with "terrorist elements" hiding in the desert on both sides of the road, according to the statement.

In July, 11 people affiliated to IS were arrested in a residential apartment located inside Imbaba, Giza, where police seized large amounts of explosives.

Egypt has been fighting against a wave of terror activities that killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers since the military toppled former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 in response to mass protests against his one-year rule and his now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group.

An anonymous security source told Al-Ahram that three militants have been killed in the attack as well.

Egypt's military and security forces have been battling various Islamist militant groups, mostly in North Sinai, though militants have carried out attacks elsewhere in the country.

One of the suspects reportedly attempted to detonate a suicide belt but was killed by the police.
