Living ex-US presidents launch hurricane relief effort

Washington, Sep 8 (IANS) Five former U.S. presidents launched a joint campaign to raise funds for Harvey victims, a catastrophic hurricane that left 71 dead and thousands displaced on the Texas coast.

"Hurricane Harvey brought awful destruction, but it also brought out the best in humanity", said Bill Clinton, the 42nd president.

The "One America Appeal" campaign is a joint effort that includes former presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama.

President Donald Trump supported the appeal in a tweet Thursday, writing, "We will confront ANY challenge, no matter how strong the winds or high the water".

Harvey could be one of the costliest natural disasters in US history.

Your money will go to the Houston Harvey Relief Fund, which focuses on the greater Houston region, and the Rebuild Texas Fund, which assists communities across the state.

The presidents will launch "One America Appeal", to start collecting funds with a plea broadcast during Thursday night's National Football League season opener, the group said in a statement.

The One America Appeal campaign has just launched tonight, and the former presidents have put together a quick ad that announces the initiative and offers a hopeful attitude about pulling together in the face of a crisis.

Texas Gov. Gregg Abbot said that it will take about $180 billion for his state to recover from the effects of Hurricane Harvey, The New York Post reported. "We love you, Texas", said father George H.W.

As the nation carefully watches the advance of Hurricane Irma, the presidents say they stand ready to expand their appeal to help those affected by that storm. A website for online donations is now live at OneAmericaAppeal.org. The Haitian appeal raised about $54.5 million by the time the fund was shut down two years later. After Haiti's devastating quake in 2010, Obama tapped Clinton and the younger Bush to lead a relief effort.
