Manatees rescued after Hurricane Irma left them stranded on Florida beach

Manatees rescued after Hurricane Irma left them stranded on Florida beach

A full-grown manatee can weigh in the neighborhood of 1,000 pounds, so moving one is no small task.

The storm sucked the water out of Sarasota Bay, on Florida's Gulf Coast, leaving some manatees stuck in the mud.

Great job today by Deputies Mizner and Hart as they helped rescue two Manatees that were stranded in receding water.

A group of friends came upon a pair of stranded manatees and tried desperately to save them.

Michael Sechler wrote of how he had to call in for help after seeing the creatures as they were too heavy to move back out to deeper water. He saw the water had receded and saw two manatees on the flats.

"We gave them as much water as we could, hoping the rain and storm surge come soon enough to save them", he added. The video has already been watched more than 5 million times.

He said, "We don't want anybody to risk their lives; they were trying to do the right thing but it's not worth it".

"Believe me, we tried to move them", Sechler wrote. "But between [the manatees] weighing over 500lbs and being stranded in nearly mud-like sand, we couldn't make it happen." .

"We took off our shoes and walked out through the shells to find two beached manatees", Sechler wrote.

"A lot of situations, rescues, where you say there is an animal in distress in these conditions, and they most likely will say we have to focus on people", he told the Herald Tribune.

The manatees weren't the only animals to be rescued so far in Florida as the state suffers Irma's wrath.
