Weekend box office: IT makes over 10 times more than second place

Weekend box office: IT makes over 10 times more than second place

This title is now held by "Deadpool", which drew a $132.4 million opening, but "It" will likely fall short due to a number of theater shutdowns in the wake of hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

The movie, made by New Line and Warner Bros, shattered records in its opening weekend, according to industry websites and studio estimates on Sunday. Horror movies typically have limited appeal beyond fans who turn out on opening weekend and fade quickly at the box office, but it remains to be seen if "It" will adhere to conventional Hollywood wisdom in the coming weeks after shattering it while opening.

But while "It" is the most exciting new release of the weekend, it is not topping the worldwide box office charts.

The film now has the largest September opening in cinematic history, the largest fall opening ever, and the largest opening weened for an R-rated horror movie.

"We couldn't be more thrilled with the results, and congratulate New Line Cinema, director Andy Muschietti and his phenomenal cast and crew on this fantastic opening". Saturday dipped only 10% to $45.7M which is a great hold for a horror movie that generated so much business upfront with pre-shows.

Domestically It took in $117.2m, making it the third biggest opening for a film this year behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 ($146.2m) and Beauty and the Beast ($174.8m).

Many movies with well known titles and huge budgets, like "Transformers: The Last Knight", "The Mummy" and Warner's "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword", flopped when they failed to grab audience's attention as "It" did.

The weekend box office for "It" is even more remarkable given the movie only cost $35 million to produce. Before that, there was Hotel Transylvania 2 at $48.5 million.

Although "It" has just been released, plans for a second film are already underway. Flying past $900M in the end seems very likely - a popular hangout for movies which include Iron Man.

That's a hell of a lot better than some of the other new releases that came through this weekend, though.
