Boy, 11, and parents killed falling into volcanic crater

Boy, 11, and parents killed falling into volcanic crater

However, when his folks attempted to hurry to his safeguard, they too were sucked in, police said.

When they tried to pull him to safety, the crater's base collapsed and they both fell 1.5 metres.

An 11-year-old boy and his parents have died after falling into a volcanic crater near Naples. They are understood to have fallen 5ft but it is not yet known whether they were killed by the fall or by toxic gas fumes.

Their 11-year-old son ran through a safety barrier and went onto an unstable portion of the crater that is made of crumbling quicksand.

A local worker who was near the accident, Diego Vitagliano, told the BBC that it was "the worst thing he had seen in his life".

The boy's father, 45, died by falling into a pit of boiling-hot mud, the Campania Civil Protection Department said, ANSA reported.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but were unable to save the family.

The boy slipped after breaching a fence surrounding the Solfatara Crater in Pozzuoli and his parents followed in an attempt to rescue their son, police said. They have determined that the fields have risen by about 12in over a decade. "'I was at the Solfatara for work, along with other visitors we realized that something had happened and we approached the crater". "I express my closeness from the community of Pozzuoli to the victims' family", he said.

The dormant Solfatara, which last erupted in 1198, has a shallow crater and emits steam with sulphurous fumes.
