Chicago Teen Found Dead In Hotel Freezer Sparks Outrage, Confusion

Chicago Teen Found Dead In Hotel Freezer Sparks Outrage, Confusion

Martin was angry about what she said was hotel workers' lack of urgency in the face of her pleas for help finding her daughter Saturday morning, directing her to the police rather than immediately reviewing hotel footage.

Jenkins' friends, Martin said, told her the young woman disappeared after they briefly left her alone in the hotel hallway to retrieve her auto keys and cellphone from the room.

More questions than answers remain surrounding the death of a Kenneka Jenkins whose body was found inside the freezer of a hotel in Rosemont early Sunday morning. Jenkins was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:48 a.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner's office. But Jenkins' mother, Tereasa Martin (pictured above)-who told the Tribune she last saw her daughter around 11:30 p.m. on Friday when she left for the party-said "stories changed over and over". An autopsy has been conducted but a cause of death hasn't been determined.

Detectives are looking at the Roberts video and others, a Rosemont Police spokesman told reporters. In it, Jenkins appears to be sitting on the bed with a group of people around her, leading numerous video's 4 million viewers to believe there was foul play involved in her death. Jenkins is reflected in the sunglasses she's wearing and show where she was sitting inside the hotel room.

Mack, the Rosemont spokesman, told the Tribune that police were not now disclosing who found the body and whether there were any signs of trauma.

"They are leaving no stone unturned as far as trying to corral everyone they can and talk to them and interview them about what happened and what was going on that night", said Mack. Some have threatened to harm people in the room.

Several other videos shared by Shelton that depict Jenkins have also been viewed millions of times.

Investigations are ongoing into the murder and witnesses are being interviewed and content posted on social media is also being examined.

Mack told the Tribune it may take weeks to find out what happened to Kenneka as the medical examiner's office awaits results from the toxicology tests. "I don't think anything has been ruled in or ruled out at this point", said Mack. How she died is still unknown, but police do not suspect foul play at this point.

Records from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration show that walk-in freezer deaths are rare, but one happened a year ago at a hotel in Atlanta.

An exit button inside the freezer was supposed to allow people to open the door if it shut behind them, but authorities found it sometimes malfunctioned, The Associated Press reported.

"I have an idea that something might have happened", she said. The teen's body was discovered nearly 24 hours after she went missing.

According to Martin, she received a call from her daughter's friends around 4 a.m. on Saturday that Kenneka was missing.

Meanwhile, Jenkins' family and Holmes pleaded with anyone who was in the hotel room that night to come forward with information.
