Light Drinking in Pregnancy is Little Harmful

Light Drinking in Pregnancy is Little Harmful

Previous research shows up to 80pc of pregnant women in Ireland, the UK, New Zealand and Australia drink alcohol during pregnancy.

Researchers can't ethically do a true study to determine exactly how much alcohol a pregnant person can drink before it crosses the line and hurts the fetus, so there's no evidence there, either.

"When a woman drinks alcohol during pregnancy, the alcohol in her blood quickly passes through the placenta and the umbilical cord to the baby", Jarris explained.

Expecting moms may not have anything at all to feel guilty about if they decide to drink a glass of wine on occasion while pregnant, a new study from the University of Bristol says.

However, the team behind the research point out they are not promoting drinking in pregnancy, and agree that no alcohol is the safest option.

Still, he said, "the message from the March of Dimes is: Don't drink alcohol if you're pregnant, trying to get pregnant or think you may be pregnant". As per official guidelines, pregnant women should avoid alcohol "just in case".

Dr Christoph Lees, clinical reader in obstetrics at Imperial College London, said: "Whilst it is possible that light drinking is associated with a slightly higher risk of having a small baby, there are other possible explanations". Research on the potential risks of light drinking during pregnancy is really scarce. However, the evidence regarding light drinking is still unclear.

Very few studies compared light to non-drinkers and there was a distinct lack of evidence on most other outcomes for the baby, including development, behaviour, cognitive impairment, greater problems in pregnancy or a more complicated delivery.

Pregnant women who drink up to two standard glasses of wine a week are unlikely to harm their unborn baby, a new study suggested. "We believe women should have access to high quality, evidence-based information on matters relating to pregnancy, are capable of making the choices that are right for them, and should be trusted to do so".

"Formulating guidance on the basis of the current evidence is challenging", the researchers mused, which is a delicate way of saying "It's impossible to say one way or another".

But again, the NHS say the safest approach is to avoid alcohol while pregnant.

In seven of those studies, light drinking was associated with at least eight percent increased risk of having a small baby or a premature birth.

Experts in Australia have warned pregnant woman against drinking, despite a United Kingdom study arriving at a different conclusion. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that there is "no safe level of alcohol use during pregnancy".

According to a report appeared in the Guardian, drinking in pregnancy is a fraught issue and causes much anxiety. It also shows the failure of researchers so far to focus on light versus no alcohol consumption instead of moderate and heavy alcohol consumption.
