More than 1M without power in Florida

More than 1M without power in Florida

Irma tied Florida Keys (1935), Gilbert (1988), and Wilma (2005) for the second strongest maximum winds of all-time for an Atlantic hurricane when it topped out at 185 miles per hour.

Buckhorn said areas along the Tampa Bay shoreline could expect a unsafe storm surge anywhere from 3 to 8 feet, adding that it would depend on where Irma went. Forecasters expect the storm to slow rapidly once it is over land and wear itself out over the southeastern the next few days. It can cause "extreme flooding in coastal areas particularly when storm surge coincides with normal high tide", according to the National Hurricane Center.

Irma is now a Category 4 storm, the second-highest designation.

The death toll across the Caribbean from Hurricane Irma climbed Sunday while fears of more damage from Hurricane Jose eased as the latter storm turned northward.

RICK SCOTT: The storm surge comes after the strongest winds.

After battering its way up Florida's Gulf Coast and downgraded to a Category 1, Hurricane Irma was expected to cross into Georgia on Monday afternoon as a tropical storm, leaving potentially unsafe storm surges in its wake.

The winds pulled water out of the Tampa Bay and into the Gulf of Mexico.

CNN meteorologist Judson Jones said the severity of the storm surge depended on which side of the storm Tampa was on.

Authorities have sent an aircraft carrier and other Navy ships to aid search-and-rescue operations amid reports of wide devastation in the hurricane-battered Florida Keys. No injuries have been reported.

In all about 2 million people and businesses had lost power.

Irma made landfall at Cudjoe Key just after 9 a.m. Sunday. It could remain a risky storm throughout that time.

Irma - the most powerful ever Atlantic Ocean hurricane - already claimed the lives of 28 people as it tore its way across the Caribbean, prompting the mass evacuation of 6.3 million people.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster issued a mandatory evacuation for some barrier islands.

The hurricane center has discontinued all storm surge and tropical storm warnings.

In Alabama, some city school districts including Birmingham, Huntsville and Auburn planned to close Monday and in some cases Tuesday.

Ten people died on Cuba, where Irma hit the northern coast as a Category 5 storm.

The big question is: Is Jose something for the United States to worry about?
