Brexit talks postponed to hand negotiators more flexibility: Britain

Brexit talks postponed to hand negotiators more flexibility: Britain

Pro-Brexit supporters argued before the EU referendum a year ago that closer defence cooperation between the bloc's member states was another sign of closer union, and on Tuesday the Veterans for Britain group said the paper was "a grave mistake".

Members of the European Commission will have to wait two years before taking up new employment after they quit the EU executive under a new ethical code of conduct proposed by the President of the Commission on Wednesday.

European Union leaders also slammed the proposal as insufficient.

Mr Juncker insisted the "wind is back in Europe's sails" as he boasted that countries were clamouring to do trade deals.

Speaking in French, German and English, Juncker made it clear that Brexit was not a major issue for him, stating that "we will move on because Brexit isn't everything".

"When I stood before you this time a year ago, I had a somewhat easier speech to give". Such as president would be chosen in an EU-wide vote.

He said that the EU Commission can not take credit for this alone, but that if nine million jobs had been lost "we'd have taken the blame".

The commission president, however, did not support the idea of a euro area budget and eurozone-parliament.

'Europe is about more than the single market'.

The government said a short delay "would give negotiators the flexibility to make progress".

European Union leaders, who usually meet every three months, tend to reach overall political agreements that are later translated into legislative acts by relevant ministers.

Compared to last year's speech - which, if anything, "was a call to stop the collapse of the EU" - this year's address "struck a far more optimistic note, as Juncker praised the bloc's achievements over the last 12 months and laid out his vision for the bloc's future", says Deutsche-Welle. Although he said enlargement is not possible under his mandate, he argued that the accession process must continue.

"The rule of law means that law and justice are upheld by an independent judiciary", Juncker said. It was plain for all to see that our union was not in a good state.

"East to west: Europe must breathe with both lungs".

With the European Parliament effectively having a veto on any Brexit deal, its members say Britain needs to do more to convince them. "The judgements of the European Court of Justice have to be respected by all".

Recently, Poland has defied ECJ rulings on logging in the primeval Bialowieza forest, and Hungary has reneged on on European Union migration quotas. "Things might change for the whole European Union and the balance in the European Union will be changed". "It is a must", he added.

Mr Juncker said he would fight for equal rights for their consumers, but their workers would not be allowed to unfairly undercut those in western members.

It will say the United Kingdom has the largest defence budget and development budget in Europe, while it has also committed to invest at least 50% of development spend in fragile states and regions.
