Dead, Others Evacuated At Hollywood Nursing Home Without Power After Irma

Hollywood police chief Tom Sanchez said investigators believe the deaths at the Rehabilitation Centre in Hollywood Hills were heat-related, and added: "The building has been sealed off and we are conducting a criminal investigation".

Six people at a Florida nursing home have died after residents were stuck in sweltering conditions following Hurricane Irma. "I would be remiss if i didn't say our deepest sympathies goes out to the families of those lost their lives", Gould said.

Larkin Community Hospital, which is adjacent to the retirement home, was also being evacuated.

So far, power has been restored to more than two million homes and business, but there is more to be done. The Florida Health Care Association, an industry group for long-term care, released a statement emphasizing the strain Hurricane Irma has put on nursing homes and care centers.

A state official eventually said they found a generator and gas, but it was not needed: The power turned back on.

With the assistance of Memorial Healthcare System - Memorial Regional Hospital is across the street - officers and firefighters evacuated 115 people from the center and Larkin Community Hospital.

The deaths are under investigation. Florida Gov. Rick Scott has said that restoring power to hospitals and nursing homes was a priority.

Police say rescue crews were called to the nursing home just after 4:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The family members requested the restraining order to make sure information from computers, medical records, emails, and text messages are preserved from the Lake Arthur Place nursing home. The Florida deaths include four people who died of carbon monoxide poisoning from electric generators in two separate incidents.

According to the New York Times, Florida law requires nursing homes to be prepared for providing emergency power, food, water, supplies, and staff in an emergency.

Further up the coast, the cleanup effort continues in SC, where the state's utilities report that more than 63,000 customers continued to be without service Wednesday morning.

Through a representative, Carballo told the SunSentinel newspaper that the home has a back-up generator but that it does not power the air conditioning. She can't talk or walk.

At least 27 people died in Florida and nearby U.S. states, and destruction was widespread in the Keys, where Irma made initial USA landfall on Sunday and became the second major hurricane to strike the mainland this season.
