Japanese PM Shinzo Abe arrives in India

Japanese PM Shinzo Abe arrives in India

In order to make this happen, Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has already arrived India on a two-day visit and was accorded a warm welcome by his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi at the Ahmedabad airport.

Goyal preferred to call it a high speed rail project instead of using its popular nomenclature as the bullet train and said it is only the beginning of the high speed corridors in India, one from Delhi to Mumbai, another from Delhi to Kolkata and Delhi to Chandigarh and Nagpur as also from Mumbai to Chennai and Nagpur.

On Thursday, PM Modi and his Japanese counterpart will hold the 12th India-Japan Annual Summit, at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.

At the summit meeting today, Japan is also expected to affirm close cooperation with India, to address the threat from North Korea, which conducted a sixth nuclear test recently and has continued to launch ballistic missiles, officials said.

"This visit will allow (Abe) to take a greater leap into a new Japan-India era and think of ways to strengthen our relations with India", Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said on Tuesday.

During Modi-Abe Gujarat visit, both the top leaders and other VVIP delegates accompanying them will receive a presidential, sit-down three-plate service with a five-course menu, each course having three sub-courses.

Abe wrote a short message in Japanese - "Love and Thanks" - on the visitors' log book at the ashram. As Indian Railways network is one of the largest networks in the world, yet it does not have a high-speed bullet train that able to achieve an average speed of over 250 km ph. India-Japan ties are on an upswing in a range of areas, including defence and security. The first bullet rail link being established between Ahmedabad and Mumbai will prove to be the biggest development in railway transport in post-Independence India as it will reduce the travel time between the two cities from the present 7-8 hours to less than 3 hours. Sabarmati Ashram was the first stop of the prime ministers who are on a two-day Ahmedabad visit.

At 4 PM Abe will engage in India-Japan Business Plenary and will leave for Tokyo at 9:35.

Massive preparations are being done for the grand welcome of the Japanese Prime Minister. Almost 85 percent of the total project cost of $19 billion will be provided by Tokyo in soft loans, with repayment over 50 years.

The president is likely to visit Japan again sometime around the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit starting November 10 in Vietnam.

The two leaders last met in July on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, Germany.

Later, Modi hosted dinner for Abe and Akie at famous "Agashiye" restaurant, known for its elegance and kosher Gujarati cuisine.
