Leaders prepare to pull the trigger on India's bullet train

Leaders prepare to pull the trigger on India's bullet train

"China is pleased to see the infrastructure among the regional countries including the high-speed railway", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a media briefing in Beijing when asked about the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project using Japanese technology. "It shall also benefit the farmers for transportation of agricultural produce in a fast mode", Goyal added.

The high-speed rail was envisioned by PM Modi to take Indian Railways towards most modern technologies like the developed countries.

With the Indian Railways adopting most modern technologies, the bullet train was an endeavor to bring economic growth and prosperity in the country, he said.

Earlier in May, Achal Khare who is the managing director of the National High Speed Rail Corporation said that the bullet train project would be completed by December 2023. However, Abe has indicated Japan, is expected to sign as many as 10 memorandums of understandings.

"Repayment of loan is to begin after 15 years of receiving the loan, making it practically free since, this loan interest works out to roughly Rs 7-8 crore per month", said a railway statement. The soft loan has been provided at a rate of interest of 0.1% per annum with a repayment period of 50 years, which includes a grace period of 15 years. In addition, 300 young officials of Indian Railways are being trained in Japan to give them exposure in high Speed Track Technology. Thailand and China are also jointly developing a multibillion-dollar high-speed railway line that will ultimately link Bangkok to southern China. The end of September marks the start of the busiest domestic air travel season, so the fares available for this period would rank among the highest in the year. If it stops at all 12 stations, it will take 2 hours and 58 minutes.

The long-awaited Bullet Train project will start from Ahmedabad and will cover 508 kilometers via Sabarmati, Surat, and Vadodara to reach Mumbai.

With projected top speeds of up to 350 kilometres (217 miles) an hour - more than double the maximum speed offered by the fastest trains operating in India - it will reduce travel time between the two cities from eight hours to at most three-and-a-half hours. The high-speed train will halt at all ten stations on the proposed high-speed corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, while the rapid high-speed train will halt only at major stations.

Besides, the train would also pass from the country's biggest tunnel of 21 km. Of the 508-km stretch, 92 per cent of the route will be elevated, six per cent in tunnel and the rest two per cent will be on the ground. The 16-car bullet train will be able to seat 1,250 people. Thus, the fares on the bullet train would be between Rs 3,000-5,000.

Despite work only just beginning, India is already looking to the future by reviewing other potential high-speed corridors: Delhi-Kolkata, Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Chennai, Delhi-Chandigarh, Mumbai-Nagpur and Delhi- Nagpur. In Japan, Shinkansen trains run barely three minutes apart, and since drivers can not spot signals due to the high speeds, the whole traffic management is automated.
