Los Angeles will host Olympics in 2028

An International Olympic Committee meeting in Peru is to make it official that LA will host in 2028 and that the 2024 Games will go to Paris.

That confirms what seemed more and more apparent this summer as the two cities vied against one another in the bid process for the 2024 Games.

The evaluation commission signed off on those Monday, saying that although details need to be finalized, it is confident LA can host in 2028.

Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti said, "Bringing the Olympics back home to LA gives us the chance to imagine what our city will look like a decade from now".

The Los Angeles 2028 Games, with a budget of US$5.2b (NZ$7.3b), will essentially follow the plan they had in place for 2024, including housing athletes at the UCLA campus.

Past Olympic hosts had seven years to prepare from when they were awarded the Games to their staging, compared to LA's 11.

Both Paris and Los Angeles made final presentations to International Olympic Committee delegates before the formality of the rubber-stamp vote was taken.

"Today, I am delighted to invite you to join the great family of Parisians, a family which belongs to the world", said the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo.

The two cities are getting the hosting rights without the usual dramatic vote.

Athletes will descend on the Golden State for the second time in 34 years when the Games return to Los Angeles in 11 years’ time

Paris and Los Angeles were the only competitors left for 2024 after rival cities pulled their bids because of worries over cost.

IOC President Thomas Bach, the driving force behind the double award, described the candidacies as a “golden opportunity”.

Hosting the Olympics is nothing new for Paris, although it has been a while.

In January 2015, the USOC initially selected Boston as the U.S.'s candidate.

But when the MA capital withdrew over cost concerns, L.A. quickly stepped into what eventually became a two-city race with Paris for the 2024 Games.

The IOC subsequently chose to award the 2024 and 2028 Games at the same time, but the two cities had to decide which would go first.

"Many times every city is working so hard.to build the infrastructure, they can't think about the environment, they can't think about the economy, they can't think about the health of their people".

Overcoming numerous obstacles and navigating a first-of-its-kind bid process, global law firm Proskauer played an integral role in bringing the summer Olympics back to USA soil for the first time since 1996.

He said he can't wait for his city to welcome the global event back.
