United Kingdom steps up to help Overseas Territories ravaged by Hurricane Irma

Department for International Development (DFID) Field Teams have been sent to the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Turks and Caicos, Antigua, Barbados and the Dominican Republic. "The prison was breached, over 100 very serious prisoners escaped".

Britain ooday announced an extra £25 million (RM139 million) in aid for its territories in the Caribbean that have been devastated by Hurricane Irma.

"We had a serious threat of a complete breakdown of law and order in the British Virgin Islands (BVI)", junior foreign minister Alan Duncan said to Parliament.

Britain's rescue effort in the fallout from Hurricane Irma has been criticised as "absolutely pathetic", with claims that other countries acted much more quickly and effectively in bringing disaster relief to the region.

Nearly 500 British troops have been deployed to Caribbean islands ravaged by Hurricane Irma as Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon says the "relief operation is well under way". He added that 997 British military personnel had been deployed to the Caribbean. "We will come forward with plans to restore these islands, get them back on their feet".

The all-terrain vehicles have been stowed on HMS Ocean which is due to sail to the Caribbean today.

The United Kingdom has stepped up to assist its Overseas Territories affected by Hurricane Irma.

At least 38 people were killed and thousands left homeless when the hurricane struck several islands in the Caribbean during September.

"And I'm pleased to say that 24 hours later, or 48 hours later, we've been able significantly to reinforce the Marines".

Almost 40 of them are considered extremely unsafe, with fears that security on the island devastated by Hurricane Irma is extremely vulnerable, writes The Telegraph.

Ms Thornberry said the risk of waterborne infections was growing on some islands, and asked: "What is the Government doing as part of its emergency support for the overseas territories to help their governments establish command and control, maintain law and order where it is threatening to break down and put in place emergency plans to stop causes of preventable waterborne diseases before they begin to spread?"
