Hurricane Jose hangs on in the Atlantic

Hurricane Jose hangs on in the Atlantic

The forecast is for Jose to peak at 85 miles per hour winds on Sunday and stay at 80-85 miles per hour through day 5.

Beyond the maneuver, forecasters don't agree on where Jose will eventually go in the Atlantic, with the current National Hurricane forecast calling for it to move to the north-northeast by the beginning of next week.

He added that although Jose "will not come close to any landmass through at least Monday, it will generate large swells that will propagate away from the hurricane". It lost a lot of its punch from earlier Tuesday and was as high as a Category 4 storm with winds around 155 miles per hour.

Rough surf will persist from Florida to MA into next week. The wave train off the Coast of Africa continues to be active and unfortunately I would expect several more "named" storms before the season is done.

Where is Jose headed next week? By Tuesday, it could be east of North Carolina and Virginia.

Jose could be swept completely out to sea by a non-tropical system, passing between Bermuda, the Northeast coast and Atlantic Canada. Rough surf and beach erosion would remain a problem for coastal areas.

At this time, Jose's path shows no interest in the eastern seaboard of the United States, however some models indicate it could brush the New England coast sometime next week.

It's Jose's potential track that is getting all the attention, however.

We have just been through one of the most active and destructive stretches in recent Atlantic Hurricane history.
