'Iranian pilgrims' among 50 dead in Islamic State-claimed Iraq blast

Two attacks in southern Iraq have left at least 50 people dead and dozens more wounded.

Shortly after, a vehicle bomb was exploded at a nearby checkpoint, killing at least four Iranian citizens according to one report.

Police sources confirmed that some police officers too had died in the checkpoint attack.

ISIS have claimed responsibility for the attack.

Shortly afterwards, an explosives-laden auto targeted a security checkpoint in the same area.

"We also express our condolences to the fellow peoples of Iraq and Iran", said the ministry statement.

Earlier the source put the dead toll at seven, including three Iranians, and said 20 others were wounded by the two attacks.

That was followed by blasts caused by two suicide bombers, including one driving a auto full of explosives, Thi Qar governor Yahya al Nassiri said. Numerous dead are suspected to include Iranian pilgrims and security forces personnel.

The attack started when unidentified gunmen opened fire at people in a highway restaurant.

Iranian pilgrims who were at the restaurant in the first attack were among the casualties.

Nasiriyah is the capital of Dhi Qar Governorate, which has a large Shiite population. The Shi'ite dominated Dhiqar province is 320 kilometers southeast of Baghdad.

Bomb attacks in southern Iraq, where the bulk of the country's oil is produced, are relatively rare.
