Motel 6 has reported undocumented guests to U.S. authorities, chain confirms

Motel 6 has reported undocumented guests to U.S. authorities, chain confirms

Motel 6 did not refute the allegations raised in the New Times report, saying in a statement: "Regarding the recent media story on Phoenix-area location, this was implemented at the local level without the knowledge of senior management".

One such arrest was that of 33-year-old landscaper Manuel Rodriguez-Juarez who got a room at one of the two Motel 6 locations in June.

The Phoenix New Times notes Motel 6 has a reputation for being eager to cooperate with law enforcement and a location in Warwick, Rhode Island was flagged by the ACLU for sharing its guest lists with police.

Empowered by the Trump administration and President Donald Trump's promise to severely crack down on illegal immigration, ICE agents have ramped up efforts to arrest undocumented immigrants.

Unofficially, though, employees at both locations said it was standard practice to share guest information with ICE.

Motel 6, one of the largest hotel chains in North America, confirmed that it has previously reported guests to U.S. immigration officials, a practice that attorneys say has resulted in the detention and deportation of undocumented residents.

Multiple Motel 6 chains in heavily Latino neighborhoods around Phoenix have been tipping off ICE agents when guests check in at their locations without citizenship documents.

Yasmeen Pitts O'Keefe, a spokesperson for ICE's Phoenix division, would not tell New Times whether or not the agency is acting on tips sent in by Motel 6 employees.

'When we became aware of it last week, it was discontinued. Its folksy radio ads seem so very welcoming - they're going to leave the light on for me! "We are now investigating and will provide more information shortly". There was no answer at the Motel 6 on 52nd Drive; instead, HuffPost was automatically routed to a national Motel 6 reservation service.

"We send a report every morning to ICE - all the names of everybody that comes in", the front-desk clerk told the outlet.

Denise Aguilar, an immigration attorney based in Arizona, said that rumors of employee incentives were being floated around those in ICE custody. Those are investigative techniques that we wouldn't be able to talk about, ' she said.

"It's important that businesses like Motel 6, in the climate we're in now where ICE has been unleashed, that they make very clear how they will be interacting with ICE and law enforcement", spokesman Steve Kilar said.

Though police need a warrant to compel hotels to turn over guest information, there's nothing stopping hotels from volunteering it. Hotels also have no legal obligation to inform guests that their names will be sent to the authorities, despite the obvious invasion of privacy.
