Record number of people arrested for terrorism-related offences in Britain

Record number of people arrested for terrorism-related offences in Britain

Revealing that suspects were being detained at a rate of more than one a day, the figures included 12 arrests in connection with the Westminster attack in March, 23 linked to the Manchester Arena terror bombing in May, 21 in relation to the London Bridge attack in June, and one arrest following the van attack at Finsbury Park.

The figures reflect a surge in arrests as police made wide-ranging sweeps after deadly attacks in London and Manchester earlier this year.

Of these 379 terror-related arrests over the previous year, 12 were made in connection with the Westminster attack, 23 related to the Manchester Arena bombing and 21 arrests were related to the attack some time later at London Bridge.

Only 123 people of the total arrested were charged with an offence, of which 105 were terrorism-related, according to the Home Office quarterly bulletin, released today.

It also includes the one arrest made after the auto attack near Finsbury Park Mosque.

This marked a 68% increase in the number of arrests compared to the same period a year ago - when there were 226 terrorism-related arrests.

The figures show that of those who have been arrested, 32% result in a charge.

"We have to constantly balance what is a proportionate and necessary investigation against the numbers we are looking at and I am very confident we will continue to do that to the best of our ability".

Around half (189) of those held were released without charge, while others were released on bail (54) or faced "alternative action" (11).

The increase was reflected in both the domestic and foreign terrorism categories, with domestic-related arrests rising from 10 to 52. At least 20,000 former "subjects of interest" are also kept under review.

Since mid-2013, the authorities have thwarted 19 plots - including six since the Westminster attack.
