Ricciardo could quit Red Bull if team swap to Honda engines

Ricciardo could quit Red Bull if team swap to Honda engines

The news has not been made public yet, but can be revealed here ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix weekend.

The Red Bull-Renault divorce is a major change at the team for whom stability has been a key element and casts doubt over the futures of both their drivers.

"I've been here for quite a few years now and I think next year we need to make a bigger step than we did this year, to really convince me that I can win with them".

"I think if we look to Monaco where our auto was not as good as it is now, we were already quite competitive - especially in the race", he explained.

Alonso, 36, has yet to commit to a new contract for next year, increasing speculation about a possible move away from McLaren or the sport altogether. Alonso's future with the team and Formula One is still uncertain.

It is not yet clear whether the team already have a replacement in mind but are most likely to follow their junior team Toro Rosso who are on the point of announcing a deal to buy Honda engines next year.

Renault too will have its interests advanced by moving a step away from its acrimonious Red Bull relationship and adding a high-profile brand to its supply portfolio, plus it gets Carlos Sainz, one of the sport's highest rated young drivers, into a yellow auto to replace the hitherto pointless Jolyon Palmer.

Renault had made clear it would work with McLaren only if they dropped the Italian team as they cannot provide engines to more than three teams - Renault, Red Bull and Toro Rosso now all run Renault engines - for fear of reliability issues.

Renault's relationship with Red Bull has also been hard, and Renault will also reportedly cut ties with Red Bull in 2019.

Red Bull are the only team other than Mercedes and Ferrari to have won a race this season.

Toro Rosso, however, was contracted to pay for Renault engines in 2018, thereby bringing the French manufacturer into the fold.

Red Bull relented, releasing Sainz from his Toro Rosso contract, though reportedly only on loan, keeping the Spaniard in the frame for a Red Bull Racing drive should the team lose either Daniel Ricciardo or Max Verstappen in 2019.

Despite current Renault driver Jolyon Palmer having a firm contract for the remainder of 2017, Renault are desperate to finish higher than their current eighth in the standings. He already counts twice as many DNFs - failures to complete a race - as last season, with seven Global Positioning System remaining.
