Sheriff: Jammed rifle helped in school shooting

Sheriff: Jammed rifle helped in school shooting

A student is being hailed as a hero after he was killed Wednesday while trying to stop a shooting at a high school near Spokane, Washington. County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich told reporters the shooter was a student who was armed with more than one weapon, reportedly a rifle and a handgun. The first gun jammed, but as another student tried to intervene - later identified as Sam Strahan, a friend of the suspect - he was shot in the head.

Harper said the shooter had many friends and was not bullied, calling him “nice and amusing and weird” and a huge fan of the TV show “Breaking Bad.” He also said the suspect was obsessed with other school shootings.

The sheriff called it a courageous action by the staffer. He had been "disabled" by the time police got on scene, Knezovich said, and officers did not fire their weapons.

Senator Maria Cantwell tweeted, "Closely monitoring devastating news of the school shooting in Spokane County".

An employee at the school says it's heartbreaking for all of Freeman's students.

Michael Harper, 15, a sophomore at the school, told The Associated Press that the suspect was a classmate who had always been obsessed with past school shootings. He rode the bus to school with them stashed in his duffel bag. Hospital officials said all three patients were in stable condition. KREM-TV reports the suspected shooter was taken into custody.

Some media reports include the identities of the students, but they have not been released by law enforcement at last report. Harper says some students alerted counselors.

The teen that talked to KXLY-TV about the shooter also told the AP that the shooter had many friends and was not bullied, calling him "nice and amusing and weird" and a huge fan of the TV show "Breaking Bad".

Caleb Sharpe allegedly opened fire in a hallway at Freeman High School in Washington state on Wednesday.

The teen suspect in this latest gun rampage - a young man described by one classmate as being obsessed with past school shootings - was taken into custody. It said the bloodshed began outside a biology class on the school's second floor. He provided no more details. Specialists are reacting to reports of a shooting at a secondary school south of Spokane, Washington.

The shooting was reported at Freeman High School in Rockford on Wednesday.

Her father, Joe, has another daughter who attends the middle school on campus.

An "active shooter" was arrested last Friday at a school in Columbus, Ohio, although no one was injured in that incident.
