Turkey warns Arbil to avoid emotional statements

Turkey warns Arbil to avoid emotional statements

A parliamentary majority in Baghdad voted in opposition to the September 25 referendum planned by the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) prompting Kurdish lawmakers to walk out of the session, which was attended by 204 of parliament's 328 members.

"He [McGurk] called me saying that "this is a wrong decision" and that they know that this decision should not have taken place".

Kurdish leaders will study a western delegation's plan to delay the autonomous region's planned referendum on independence, according to a statement from the Kurdish presidency. "Despite the warnings of Turkey and all members of the worldwide community who act with common sense, we are concerned by the KRG leadership's persistence and its increasingly emotional statements on the referendum", it said.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Kurdish region of Iraq, Massoud Barzani, said the referendum is "a natural right".

It described the KRG leadership's "increasingly emotional statements" in favor of independence as "alarming".

"Israel supports the legitimate efforts of the Kurdish people to achieve their own country", Netanyahu said in a commentary sent to foreign correspondents from his office.

A Kurdish leading party on Thursday rejected the decision of the move.

Earlier in the day, the parliament received a demand from Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi asking the lawmakers to vote to remove Najm al-Din Kareem from his post as governor of Kirkuk province, the state-run Iraqiya Channel said.

Iraqi Kurdish oil is exported through Turkey, a key economic lifeline for the region.

The governor said he keeps his position despite the vote. "We therefore except Arbil to listen to our warning", he said. "(They) never surrendered land except after destroying it", he said.

Karim denied that the PUK office is against holding the referendum.

He concluded that the decision by the Iraqi PM, and the Iraqi parliament "further united the Kurds" to be more insistent on the referendum.
