Lights still out for 5.8 million USA customers after Irma

Lights still out for 5.8 million USA customers after Irma

At least 32 deaths have been reported in Florida and seven more combined in Georgia and SC.

Eight elderly resident of a Florida nursing home died Wednesday. Most of those deaths were the result of either medical issues as they prepared for the storm or carbon monoxide poisoning.

NextEra Energy Inc's FPL, Florida's biggest electric company, said on Friday about 1.1 million customers had no power, while Duke Energy Corp reported that more than 371,000 customers were in the dark and Tampa Electric, a unit of Emera Inc (EMA.TO), reported about 39,000 were without power.

More than 60,000 workers from across the United States and Canada were involved in the restoration efforts, including those from the affected companies and other utilities, according to the Edison Electric Institute, an industry trade group.

FPL, the state's largest utility, said its outages dipped to around 2.5 million customers by Tuesday evening from a peak of more than 3.6 million on Monday morning, but that was still more than half of its customers.

The death toll from Hurricane Irma was at 82 early on Friday as 1.5 million homes and businesses in Florida remained without power in sweltering heat, five days after the historic storm ripped through southeast U.S.

Sorry, Miami, but Florida Power & Light isn't really going to pay for that old rotten food inside your refrigerator.

Georgia Power said it believes 95 percent of impacted customers will see service restored by Sunday night.

Some Florida utilities, including FPL, warned customers it could take weeks to restore power in the hardest hit areas.

About 150 of Florida's almost 700 nursing facilities do not have power restored, according to the Florida Health Care Association, an advocacy group representing facilities statewide. A workforce of more than 21,500 employees and contractors from almost 30 states and Canada have worked around the clock. The Red Cross is opening four shelters in the Florida Keys.
