Microsoft's Intelligent Delivery System Will Save Space On Your Xbox One HDD

Microsoft's Intelligent Delivery System Will Save Space On Your Xbox One HDD

For example, this would mean that those who, for various reasons, don't want to download the 4K assets for Xbox One X games won't have to, or they might opt out to download the multi-language support that many games come with, saving huge amounts of storage space.

This also opens the door for developers to deliver their games on multiple discs once again - something that was once common a few generations ago, and persisted on Xbox 360 for larger games. The platform holder describes the potential savings here as "massive". If space runs out on the drive, the user can delete the data that's only used by the older Xbox One, deleting that chunk via the dashboard.

When the Xbox One X launches in November it will allow exclusive 4K, HDR and 60FPS game capture options.

One example of a situation that will take advantage of the new Xbox One technology is a game that supports various languages. With the Intelligent Delivery system, single-player and multiplayer parts of the game can be partitioned off, allowing the user to delete either component if they're not using them. All of this will still be available on demand via the Xbox One dash. However, for gameplay, disc one must be in the drive, acting as a license check.

While Intelligent Delivery has the potential to greatly streamline delivery and installation of games on the Xbox One family of consoles, it is up to the individual developer to implement it. If Microsoft feels that the effort will be worth it, we could see this get a global release for Backwards Compatibility some time later.

That's because, thanks to Intelligent Delivery, those without 4K capable consoles won't be required to download the 4K assets that they can't actually make the most of.

As games get bigger, Microsoft has cooked up a sly way to keep Xbox One and Xbox One X download times down, not to mention save on hard drive space.
