Nissan, Mitsubishi, Renault to launch 12 new electric cars by 2022

In addition to developing some 40 models equipped with driverless, or "autonomous", technology, Renault-Nissan is also planning to launch a ride-hailing service featuring "robotic vehicles".

A total of 12 new zero-emission electric vehicles will be launched by 2022 using new common electric vehicle platforms and components for multiple segments. Mitsubishi joined what had been the Renault Nissan Alliance beginning a year ago, when Nissan took effective control of Mitsubishi.

Alliance 2022 didn't have any vehicle designs or prototypes to show off.

He dismissed idea of a consolidation of alliance or strengning of cross-shareholdings between its members, explaining that strategic plan would take place by " respecting identities of companies ".

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance is hot on the trails of VW in the electrification race after the French-Japanese coalition revealed a masterplan that shares' the Germans' ambition.

Specific goals include further collaboration on common platforms, powertrains and next-generation electric, self-driving and connectivity technologies.

Carlos Ghosn, chairman and chief executive officer of the Alliance, said, "This plan will boost the growth and profitability of our member companies".

The Renault Zoe, a hatchback one size smaller launched in 2012 by its French alliance partner, is the best-selling electric auto in Europe-though its uses largely separate underpinnings than the Leaf.

The alliance also plans to benefit from enhanced economies of scale.

The 14 million units at horizon 2022 are expected to represent a combined turnover of 240 billion dollars (201 billion euros), has exposed Mr. Ghosn. In the first half of 2017, volumes increased by seven percent year-on-year to 5.27 million units, whilst aggregate sales of electric vehicles reached a combined total of more than 500,000 units. This will be achieved partially by contributions from Mitsubishi Motors, specifically through deeper localisation, joint plant utilisation, common vehicle platforms, and an expanded presence in mature and emerging markets.

In order to achieve the targets, the main strategy will be for the three companies to use four common platforms - the basic structure of a vehicle. In 2022, more than 9 million vehicles will be built on four common platforms, up from 2 million vehicles on two platforms in 2016.
