No floor test till September 20 in TN, orders Madras HC

No floor test till September 20 in TN, orders Madras HC

The Madras High Court today ordered that no floor test will be conducted in Tamil Nadu Assembly till September 20.

AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran camp MLAs have furnished an interim reply to Tamil Nadu Speaker P Dhanapal's notice which followed a plea by Government Chief Whip S Rajendran to disqualify them.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, the combative leader also alleged that Palanisamy had tried to "adopt short-cut" method of facing a floor test of his government on Monday by disqualifying 18 MLAs supporting him.

The Dinakaran camp claims a support of 19 MLAs. The Palaniswamy Government has the support of 111 MLAs while the Opposition DMK and the rebel AIADMK combine has a strength of 117 MLAs in the House.

Stalin had, on Sunday, called on the governor and urged him to direct the Palaniswami government to prove its majority in the Assembly within a week, in the wake of the revolt by the 19 AIADMK MLAs against the chief minister last month.

The DMK, which has a few times petitioned Rao to direct the Palanisamy government to prove its numbers, had moved the court on the matter recently.

On Wednesday, Dhinakaran said that he would never go with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), amid speculations that his faction would part ways from the merged factions of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palanisamy and his predecessor O Panneerselvam.

A group of MPs and MLAs owing allegiance to the Dinakaran faction told the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners that according to the AIADMK by-laws, a general council meeting can be convened only by the general secretary or a person authorised by the top office-bearer.

The PIL also sought to restrain Chief Minister "Edappadi" K Palaniswami from taking any major/policy decision pending disposal of the writ petition.

"The Governor delayed (on directing floor test), but DMK won't keep quiet".

Dhinakaran had earlier dismissed the September 12 General Council as a "public meeting", saying the court could have the final say on the matter.

Very soon we'll hold another General Council meet of the party after getting the consent of General Secretary VK Sasikala, Vijila Sathyananth, a member of the TTV Dhinakaran-led faction said. "To protect our party, I will go to any extent", he said, adding that his faction has 21 MLAs on its side.
