School dormitory fire kills at least 23 in Malaysia

School dormitory fire kills at least 23 in Malaysia

At least 23 people, a lot of them students, were killed in a fire that tore through a religious school in Kuala Lumpur this morning. Officials said firefighters controlled the fire in less than an hour. Two students from the school are still in critical condition.

Fire Department operations deputy director Soiman Jahid said the dormitory had only one entrance, leaving numerous victims trapped.

By the time firefighters arrived at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah school in the heart of the capital, "the screams had stopped", she added. Some witnesses said they had heard the students crying for help after the fire broke out. The fire broke out in the dormitory on the top floor of the three-story building.

'I broke a window and grabbed a pipe attached to the outside of the building and I used it to escape to the ground, ' he said.

Malaysia has identified all 23 people who died in a horrific fire at an Islamic boarding school, an official said on Friday.

An electrical short circuit is believed to have caused the blaze at the Islamic school, which didn't have a fire permit and was not licensed by local or religious authorities.

Mr Jahid said police were all the while exploring what caused the fire however that it likely was caused by hamper a lit mosquito repellent loop.

Officials say that bodies were stacked on top of each other, one after the other.

"This also would have made it hard for victims to escape in an emergency", he said.

These schools are unregulated by the education ministry and fall under the purview of the religious department.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Amar Singh further said that police had found at least 24 charred bodies, 22 of them boys between 13 and 17, and two wardens. This incident is being termed as one of the country's worst fire disasters for years.

In April, an 11-year-old boy from a private religious school in the southern Malaysian state of Johor had to have both of his legs amputated after he was allegedly abused at the facility.

The incident has renewed calls for greater scrutiny and regulation of "tahfiz" schools.
