Suu Kyi tells United States lawmaker she seeks aid for Rohingya

The crisis has drawn global condemnation, with United Nations officials demanding Myanmar halt what they described as a campaign of ethnic cleansing that has driven almost 400,000 Rohingya to flee Rakhine state.

"We are very much active in relation to the Rohingya crisis but unfortunately it has not been easy because the government of Myanmar until now has been completely deaf to our requests", Guterres said on September 15.

A panel was set up this week to find "pragmatic" solutions to restore "security and the rule of law" in Rakhine, from where hundreds of thousands of Rohingya minority Muslims have fled to Bangladesh since an August 25 rebel attack on military and police outposts, reports Efe news. And this is going to, in many ways, I think, define the direction that Burma will take.

Those who arrived on Wednesday in wooden boats on beaches near Shah Porir Dwip fishing village described ongoing violence in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where smoke could be seen billowing from a burning village - suggesting more Rohingya homes had been set alight.

He said he understood that Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel prize laureate and de facto head of the government in Myanmar, was in a power-sharing agreement with the military and the "complex situation" in which she found herself.

Britain and the United States have issued their clearest call yet for the Myanmar Government to step in and stop what the United Nations calls an "ethnic cleansing" operation in the country's west.

China and India might have commercial, economic and strategic interests in Myanmar besides New Delhi's general apathy and callousness towards Muslims but both Beijing and New Delhi must realise that by supporting Myanmar they would be doing injustice to a hapless community.

The Rohingya are a minority ethnic group located in Myanmar's western Rakhine state and are considered to be a variation of the Sunni religion.
