Terror probe launched after knife-wielding man attacks soldier in Paris

Terror probe launched after knife-wielding man attacks soldier in Paris

A knifeman who attacked a soldier has been arrested in Paris.

Police and military forces have been targets of attacks themselves.

A knife-wielding man tried to attack a soldier here on Friday, the French Defence Minister Florence Parly said.

The attacker lunged at the soldier at the central Chatelet metro station around 6.30 am local time, making reference to Allah, a police source said.

The suspect, said to be shouting Islamic State slogans, attacked a French soldier carrying out anti-terrorism duties in the French captial this morning. Anti-terrorist prosecutors have been put in charge of the inquiry.

This incident represents the seventh attack against soldiers patrolling as part of Operation Sentinel.

He took the attacker under control following the attack.

This new attack "justifies what we want to do, that's to say make these (security) measures even more unpredictable, undetectable for potential attackers", she said.

In August, a man rammed his vehicle into a group of soldiers near Paris, injuring six of them.

Operation Sentinel was launched after the Paris attacks, which claimed 130 lives in the French capital in November 2015. Also in August, seven soldiers were left seriously injured when a BMW drove into them deliberately.

It is the latest in a long string of attacks on service personnel involved in Operation Sentinelle - an initiative involving 10,000 soldiers and 4700 gendarmes and police. One officer was hit in the head with the hammer, prompting police to fire at the attacker.
