Watching for criminal activity on accounts after Equifax hack

Watching for criminal activity on accounts after Equifax hack

Up to 3 million MA customers - roughly half the state population - were potentially affected, according to Attorney General Maura Healey, who on Tuesday said she planned to sue the company.

Freezing your credit should prevent most forms of identity theft associated with this breach.

You can visit Equifax's website to see if you may have been affected by the breach. Personally, I trust IDShield (www.CEOIdentity.com).

New Mexicans are joining the dozens of lawsuit filed against one of the nation's biggest credit bureaus, Equifax. Federal law requires each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies to give you one free credit report every 12 months if you request it. Likewise, getting collection calls from a creditor or debt collector regarding an account that you did not authorize is an indication that you may be a victim.

"When a data breach occurs, our primary concern is protecting Georgia consumers who may have been impacted", said Attorney General Chris Carr. The company said it became aware of the breach on July 29.

The hackers accessed sensitive information including social security numbers, birth dates, addresses and more, so they have all the data they need to open accounts many victims will never even know about.

Peterson said his office was notified of the breach directly from Equifax on Friday.

Equifax discovered the hack July 29 but waited until last Thursday to warn consumers that criminals exploited a USA website application to access files between mid-May and July of this year. Though, it can also cost time and money.

Equifax responded Wednesday to the arbitration clause issue, asserting that mandatory arbitration "will not apply to the free products offered in response to the cybersecurity incident or for claims related to the cybersecurity incident itself".

"I suspect the exposure was pretty extensive, but they had to go through logs and make sure it wasn't an inside job and they had to patch the hole", says cyber security expert Todd Plesco. Promptly dispute any unauthorized charges. This prohibits a credit reporting agency from releasing any information from your credit report without written authorization and makes it harder for an identity thief to access credit in your name. Fees may be applied for placing, temporarily lifting or removing a security freeze.

In addition to the risk from the initial Equifax data breach, consumers face subsequent scams bubbling up in the aftermath.
