What the Tech? Kaspersky Anit-Virus software

The Department of Homeland Security says the risk is that the Russian government, acting on its own or in collaboration with Kaspersky, could use computer access to compromise US government systems.

For those that aren't familiar, Kaspersky has been one of the firms most commonly associated with researching and securing against common security threats like Wanna Cry and others.

A United States government decision to stop using security software from Kaspersky Lab is "regrettable", the Kremlin said on Thursday.

Kaspersky is in a thicket following a directive released by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that ordered government departments and agencies to stop using products from Kaspersky.

The decision by the US government to stop using Kaspersky Lab products is "regrettable" and delays the prospects of a restoration of bilateral ties, the Russian embassy in the United States said. "This is especially concerning because the Russian government is actively trying to undermine our democracy".

In response to the whirlwind, Kaspersky has simply responded by saying it was disappointed with Homeland Security's decision and denied any Russian government ties. Last week, Best Buy Co, the No.1 USA electronics retailer, said it was pulling Kaspersky Lab's cyber security products from its shelves and website.

McClatchy reported in July that documents it viewed appeared to show a link between Kaspersky and the Russian Security Service, the spy agency known as the FSB.

"The Department is concerned about the ties between certain Kaspersky officials and Russian intelligence and other government agencies, and requirements under Russian law that allow Russian intelligence agencies to request or compel assistance from Kaspersky and to intercept communications transiting Russian networks", DHS wrote in a statement.

DHS has given Kaspersky 90 days to provide proof that its products are not facilitating espionage for Russian Federation or to offer mitigating measures. And at the consumer level, electronics giant Best Buy announced that it was pulling Kaspersky's cybersecurity products from its shelves and websites.

The company has suggested both Russian Federation and the U.S. are trying to use it as a pawn in a geopolitical game.

Asked by Reuters whether there was a smoking gun showing Kaspersky Lab had provided intelligence to the Russian government, Joyce replied: "As we evaluated the technology, we decided it was a risk we couldn't accept".

The government ban should alarm any company that has been relying on Kaspersky's software to protect its business, said Nate Fick, CEO of computer security specialist Endgame.

Eugene Kaspersky says USA users have nothing to fear from his company, despite a government ban.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Rules Committee, sent a letter to Duke asking the department for information about the government's use of Kaspersky products, especially on critical infrastructure and election systems.
