Attorney: Slender Man attacker descended into 'madness'

Attorney: Slender Man attacker descended into 'madness'

The Waukesha County Circuit Court jury decision sends Anissa Weier, 15, to a state mental hospital, where she will not be able to seek a conditional release until July 2020, local media reported.

Two girls accused of stabbing a classmate 19 times believed they had to or a fantasy horror character called Slender Man could kill their families, a USA court has heard. "At 12 years old, she had no way to protect herself from this except to follow Morgan's advice, and they swirled down into madness together". Her trial begins in October.

The decision was made after almost a dozen hours of debate between members of the jury. Weier believed Slender Man could read her mind as well as teleport and would kill her or her family if she talked about him, she said. Jurors will determine whether she was mentally ill at the time of the stabbing.

Weier and co-defendant Morgan Geyser told investigators they stabbed Leutner to appease Slender Man, a fictional horror character.

"Anissa's broken mind caused her to lose touch with reality", defense attorney Joseph Smith told jurors.

Weier pleaded guilty in August to being a party to attempted second-degree intentional homicide, but claimed she wasn't responsible for her actions because she was mentally ill. He could sentence her more seriously than the supplication understanding calls for, including up to a 25-year responsibility, the same as the most extreme jail time she could have gotten.

A second psychologist has testified about the delusional mental state of a girl who's admitted to helping stab a classmate almost to death in a Wisconsin park in 2014.

It was Slender Man that authorities say motivated the two sixth-grade classmates to stab Payton Leutner 19 times in a Waukesha park.

Mr Van Rybroek's expert testimony matched that of another psychologist who said Weier and Geyser had a shared delusion about Slender Man. Westendorf testified at Weier's mental capacity trial that she believes Weier suffered from a shared delusional disorder that left her unable to conform her conduct to the law when she and Morgan Geyser tried to kill their friend, Payton Leutner, in 2014.

McMahon said Weier's unhappiness stemmed from her divorce, and she latched onto Geyser. The girls were allegedly trying to please the fictional internet bogeyman Slenderman. The same number (though not same jurors) voted she was not criminally responsible for her actions. He asked jurors to consider why if the girls were so afraid of Slender Man they waited so long to attack Leutner.
