Christian Atsu on target as Newcastle United brilliantly beat Stoke City

Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles scored the victor as Rafa Benitez's side beat Stoke City 2-1 at St James' Park on Saturday to post their third successive Premier League victory.

It was the ideal way for Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez, recovered from a post-operation infection, to celebrate his return to the dugout after he missed Lascelles scoring the victor at Swansea last weekend.

Newcastle secured an instant return to the Premier League last season after winning the Championship but they started the current campaign in poor fashion, losing 2-0 at home to Tottenham Hotspur before suffering a 1-0 defeat away at Huddersfield Town.

He adds that St James' Park will be a "tough" place to visit, and the atmosphere will be electrifying. I said one game at a time and now it's just to be sure that the fans enjoy it.

"We're doing okay after a tough period of fixtures".

After Xherdan Shaqiri cancelled out Christian Atsu's opener, it was left to defender Lascelles to again prove the match-winner for Newcastle.

"Ultimately it is three wins and we are really pleased, but today it could have been three, four, five goals".

"We are going to face teams like Newcastle, who show us respect in terms of our ability and what we can do to teams and will sit back and invite us on, so we have got to be a little bit better and a little bit more accurate in our work and we'll be fine".

"Maybe we can lose games, but we have to believe we can win".
