Former Colts stars Saturday, James nominated for Pro Football Hall of Fame

Former Colts stars Saturday, James nominated for Pro Football Hall of Fame

The Pro Football Hall of Fame may have made an unfortunate error of mistaken identity.

Other nominees this year who spent some time in Green Bay with the Packers are Jeff Saturday, Seth Joyner, Keith Millard, and Sean Landetta. He would return to start all 16 games the following season.

Adding to the confusion, in the "fan vote" section for Hall of Fame semifinalists, displays a picture of Steve Smith Sr., who will not be eligible for several more years. He went on to have stints with the Eagles and Rams before announcing his retirement in May 2013, finishing his career with 2,641 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

LeRoy Butler, Sterling Sharpe, Donald Driver and former head coach Mike Holmgren are all among the 108 players and coaches who have been nominated for induction into the Hall. Linebacker Cornelius Bennett, who played the last two of his 14 seasons with the Colts, was also nominated.

Well, that's what happened when readers took a look at the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2018 nominee list, which was released Tuesday.

Donaldson also had successful stops in Seattle (1993 and 1994) and Dallas (1995 and 1996) after his days in Indianapolis were over, earning Pro Bowl selections with the Cowboys both seasons.

Four of Buffalo's six nominees played for the Bills in the early 1990s, an era in which the team appeared in the Super Bowl in four consecutive years.

At the suggestion of former college roommate Nate Hobgood-Chittick, then-Colts general manager Bill Polian chose to give Saturday a tryout the following year.

We'll find out if any of the Bills' nominees will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of their 2018 class in February.

Like a potential wide receiver 2018 class that could include Moss and Owens, the linebacker class could be just as impressive with Lewis and Urlacher as possible enshrinees. However, the most logical explanation seems to be a pretty classic case of identity confusion, where the Giants' Steve Smith was forgotten while the accolades of the Panthers' Steve Smith, with his name right there on the ballot, caused the nominators to forget about that pesky five-year rule.

Of the 11 players ahead of James on the rushing charts, 10 have bronze busts in Canton, Ohio. He was also a four-time All-Pro and is a member of the NFL's 1990s All-Decade Team.
