Frank Vincent, actor best known for role in 'The Sopranos' dies

Frank Vincent, actor best known for role in 'The Sopranos' dies

Vincent had small roles in two Spike Lee films, Do the Right Thing and Jungle Fever, and also was in The Pope of Greenwich Village, Last Exit to Brooklyn, Night Falls on Manhattan and Shark Tale, among his more than 50 films.

"Frank Vincent was someone I could count on", he said in a statement.

On HBO's The Sopranos, Leotardo often butted heads with James Gandolfini's Tony Soprano as he eventually rose to become boss of the Lupertazzi crime family.

"Our family will never forget the Leotardo legacy", HBO, which was home to "The Sopranos" for its six seasons, tweeted.

According to TMZ, Vincent died during heart surgery after experiencing complications. In the wake of Vincent's death Wednesday at the age of 80, Scorsese has shared his remembrance of the actor in a written statement to THR. His official bio page does not provide a birth year.

Throughout the '90s and early 2000s, Vincent made a number of TV appearance and even voiced characters for the Grand Theft Auto series of video games. (Pesci plays guitar.) The two had once worked up a comedy act.

Depending on your mafia drama of choice, Vincent was either best known as Billy Batts in Goodfellas or Phil Leotardo in The Sopranos.

"We were like the Smothers Brothers", Vincent told NJ.com. He has also had a memorable role as Billy Batts in Goodfellas.

It was one of a string of films in which Vincent had important roles along with Pesci.

Among those who took note of The Death Collector was Martin Scorsese, who cast both Vincent and Pesci in Raging Bull (1980), about boxer Jake LaMotta, and, a decade later, Goodfellas.

Born into a family of Italian-Americans in North Adams, Mass., Frank Vincent Gattuso Jr.was raised in the Greenville section of Jersey City, New Jersey.

As an adult, he became a session drummer for such singers as Paul Anka, Del Shannon, Trini Lopez and The Belmonts.
