Kyrgios holds Aussie hopes in Davis Cup semi-final tie

Kyrgios holds Aussie hopes in Davis Cup semi-final tie

If able to cause an upset on Day 1 against Nick Kyrgios, Belgium will likely be in prime position to win the tie on Day 3, where Darcis will play the fifth and final tie, against either John Millman or Jordan Thompson. I obviously had a very disappointing (US Open).

Having taken the first set, Kyrgios saw Darcis rally to reel off the next two sets and put last year's beaten finalists, who have never won the competition, on the brink of a 2-0 lead.

"We combine well together and played together at Hertogenbosch on the grass where we got to the semis but played out some tight wins".

Kyrgios saves a pretty big serve in his column for Bernard Tomic - who for years was touted as the future of Australian tennis but who has clearly lost motivation in recent years.

"But just that whole week, building that chemistry with a team".

Kyrgios credited Australian team captain Lleyton Hewitt with fostering that team spirit, before claiming that the Davis Cup has helped rekindle his motivation for the sport. "You can't get away from it", Fitzgerald said on the Channel 7 commentary.

Steve Darcis has the power to turn this tie in favour of Belgium.

A titanic third set was decided in a tie-breaker after Darcis fought tooth and nail to save six break points in the fourth game, and a set point when 5-6 down before eventually taking the set.

It allowed Kyrigios to see out the match to seal one of his best victories in an Australian shirt.

Lajovic made a strong start and capitalised on Pouille's mistakes to prevail 6-1, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6. Goffin, ranked 12th in the world, has also been under an injury cloud since Roland Garros.

Australia's Nick Kyrgios during a practice session prior to the Davis Cup World Group semi-final in Brussels.

The weekend's winners will face the victors of the other semi-final between France and Serbia who are playing in nearby Lille.

Neither of the Belgians play a great deal of doubles but with Peers' regular Davis Cup partner Sam Groth not in the team, the Aussies will field a new-look doubles team.

The victor of the best-of-five tie will face either France or Serbia in November's final.

Outright favourites France are nevertheless heavily odds-on to progress despite losing the first rubber, as Dusan Lajovic beat Lucas Pouille 6-1 3-6 7-6 7-6.

There was no such drama in the second rubber as top-ranked Frenchman Tsonga had little trouble racing past world no 95 Djere with a routine 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-3 victory.
