Singapore Grand Prix extends Formula 1 until 2021

Singapore Grand Prix extends Formula 1 until 2021

A technical, bumpy and unforgiving circuit, the Marina Bay track has played host to several spectacular races in the past few years.

Back in November 2016, then F1 boss Bernie Eccelestone, said that Singapore was no longer interested in hosting the annual race as it has become a destination hotspot, achieving its original goal. Both Ricciardo and teammate Max Verstappen took engine penalties at the beginning of the weekend but rain in qualifying meant they were able to qualify in the top three.

The 10th installment of the Singapore Grand Prix has begun, and it looks like Red Bull Racing may have the edge over their rivals. The race is on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 8 a.m. ET, and NBCSN's pre-race live coverage will start at 7 a.m. ET.

"The Singapore Grand Prix is a signature Formula 1 race and therefore we are very pleased that it will continue to feature on the calendar for a further four years", said F1 CEO Chase Carey.

Singapore joined the schedule in 2008 as the sport's inaugural night race, and in 2012 penned an extension through to 2017.

Lewis Hamilton will put his slender championship lead on the line on Sunday as the Formula 1 circus will race under the lights of the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore.

Sebastian Vettel is the dominant driver in Singapore, having won it four times.

“Our focus as of today is making sure that the 21 races next year is everything as it can be. The kerbs are high and harsh, the road is extremely bumpy in certain locations, and despite the race taking place at night, heat can play a huge role.
