USA options on North Korea 'effective and overwhelming'

USA options on North Korea 'effective and overwhelming'

President Donald Trump's national security adviser says the US has a military option for North Korea, but that is not its preferred route.

Trump's remarks came after North Korea fired a ballistic missile over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido earlier on Friday, the latest in a stream of missile tests that have looked to defy the global community.

McMaster said new sanctions on North Korea are just going into effect and need to be given a chance to work.

U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley told reporters on Friday that North Korea has been "strangled" by sanctions and that, while it is important to pursue diplomatic options, military options remain squarely on the table if sanctions are not effective.

McMaster stressed Friday that the U.S.is still trying to resolve the conflict diplomaticcaly.

"What we are seeing is they continue to be provocative, they continue to be reckless". He calls on all nations to enforce them and do everything they can to address the threat and prevent war.

South Korea launched a ballistic missile drill in response to the latest provocation by Pyongyang. The Trump administration has repeatedly demonstrated that it is willing to exhaust all diplomatic options before applying military force, but the diplomatic window appears to be closing.

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Friday in NY to discuss the crisis, though no further sanctions were expected to be agreed. She said, however, that options for dealing with the regime of Kim Jong Un are not limited to diplomacy.

The last set of sanctions included restrictions on North Korea's oil imports and a ban on its textile exports. On Monday, it unanimously approved its toughest sanctions yet on North Korea over its nuclear test.
