Mobile to reportedly increase deprioritization threshold to 50GB

T-Mobile is all in on unlimited data plans-you can't even buy a traditional capped plan anymore. Which carrier do you get unlimited data from?

Ray is quick to point out that slower download speeds - as a result of prioritization - only come into effect if you 1) have consumed over 50GB of data in your current billing cycle and 2) you are now connected to a sector of its network that is experiencing heavy congestion. T-Mobile calls this its “Fair Usage Threshold”.

Though this new unlimited showdown has given us four different definitions of the phrase "unlimited data" - one per carrier - it is nice to see the big four make so many tweaks to their plans in response to what the competition is doing. In comparison, Verizon and AT&T have 22GB caps, while Sprint's is 23GB. Currently, T-Mobile throttles customers who use more than 32GB of data within one billing cycle.

T-Mobile confirmed via Twitter that it will implement the new change on September 20, so starting later this week, customers shouldn't be throttled down if they exceed the old 32GB threshold. Oh, there are still limits, of course, but Tmo isn't alone there.

T-Mobile says that the top 1 percent of its data users consume 50GB of data per month. Only then will you be throttled back to the lower speeds.

T-Mobile has made a name for itself by bucking industry norms and charting its own path.
