Walmart opens 'in-fridge delivery' trial in Silicon Valley

Walmart opens 'in-fridge delivery' trial in Silicon Valley

Walmart is testing a new grocery delivery service that pairs with smart door locks to allow delivery personnel to deliver groceries to the recipient's fridge if they don't answer the door. The service will need to be adequately paid for by those who sign up for it, making it a premium service that is generally outside of Walmart's traditional consumer base.

If the tests are successful, we'd expect Walmart to roll out support for more smart home devices as well.

Orders fulfilled this way would provide the delivery driver with a one-time code to unlock the door at customer's homes when the delivery arrives.

Walmart said it is partnering with August Home, a provider of smart locks and smart home accessories, to test the service in Silicon Valley.

"The Deliv associate will drop off my packages in my foyer and then carry my groceries to the kitchen, unload them in my fridge and leave". A handful of August Home customers have opted-in to participate in testing the concept. In that case, however, residents living in 1,000 apartment buildings were receiving a free Latch system for the exterior door of their building, which would allow them to securely allow access to delivery personnel.

Customers can watch the full delivery process on their smartphones through the "August home" app, and home security cameras.

The effort is one of many e-commerce innovations the retailer has developed as it continues to battle with Amazon. First, users will place an order on Walmart's website for their groceries, which will dispatch a driver from Deliv, a Walmart-owned company that uses drivers on services like Uber and Lyft for last mile deliveries, to bring it to your smarthome.

While Walmart doesn't mention how long or where else the test will run, it hopes to further expand deliveries to "whatever location works best for [their] customers", so whether the boundaries of delivery are shattered or remain intact just may be up to you.
