Deloitte hit by cyber attack, says 'very few' clients affected

Deloitte, a major U.S. and global accounting firm, revealed that it was hit with a cybersecurity breach that may have extended from October of a year ago through this past March, the Guardian reports.

The Guardian newspaper reported Monday that the breached system had information from a range of clients, including large companies and US government departments.

Another week, another report of a major cyberattack hitting a global firm. The account itself was protected with a single password and did not have multi-factor authentication setup, The Guardian reported.

Earlier this month, Equifax, the United States credit monitoring agency, admitted the personal data of 143 million USA customers had been accessed or stolen in a massive hack in May.

The Guardian understands Deloitte clients across all of these sectors had material in the company email system that was breached.

Deloitte's auditing, tax consultancy and cyber security clients include banks, multinational media enterprises, pharmaceutical firms and government agencies.

"It works with some of the biggest organisations on earth, at the very highest level, which is like a red rag to a bull for hackers", he said.

The company also believes that hackers may have access to email system since October or November 2016.

"As part of the review, Deloitte has been in contact with the very few clients impacted and notified governmental authorities and regulators", the company told the paper. Equifax, which is based in Atlanta, discovered the hack in July but only informed consumers last week.

He added, "Whilst it hasn't been confirmed exactly what was stolen, compromised mail servers can be a good source of sensitive information for an attacker, allowing them to siphon off message content and attachments".

In addition to two-factor authentication, he recommends that organizations implement effective monitoring solutions that intelligently detect incidents and respond quickly to them. "It makes it much harder to gain illicit access in the first place, and provides a warning if someone is trying to log in without your knowledge".

Deloitte did not provide further information about when the breach happened or how many emails were accessed.

Other data, such as business diagrams, were also compromised, and Deloitte's internal review is still ongoing.
