75000 evacuated near Bali volcano

The volcano last erupted in 1963 when it killed 1,100 people.

The agency said hundreds of tremors daily from the volcano indicate magma is moving toward the surface and an eruption is highly likely.

The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management declared a 12-kilometer exclusion zone around the volcano.

Strong volcanic tremors and billowing white smoke seen over the crater have raised alarm in recent days, prompting the evacuation of more than 50,000 people from villages dotting the paddy fields at the base of the forested slopes of Mount Agung.

Speaking in Klungkung district, President Joko Widodo told evacuees the government would do its best to reduce economic losses incurred during the evacuation.

After the eruption, it remained active for about a year.

"We are closely monitoring the activity of Mount Agung in Bali and assessing flying conditions", said a Jetstar spokesman.

"Mount Agung is entering a critical phase", Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said in a statement issued on September 26 after the government raised the status of the 3,031-meter-high volcano on September 22 following an increase in volcanic activity.

"There are some who are staying behind because the volcano hasn't erupted yet or because of religious beliefs", Mr Sutopo said.

"Chances of an eruption are high, but we can't say when", he said. And a hotel operator in Bali said news of the volcano had caused some guests to cancel their plans. However, embassies have warned of possible flight cancellations in the event of an eruption.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, and has close to 130 active volcanoes - more than any other country. "Tourists are still going about their activities", she said.

More than 35,000 people have been evacuated and a travel warning has been issued, with any eruption set to disrupt flights to and from the island.

Australians are being advised to check with their airline before flying and to follow all authorities and hotel staff instruction if travelling to Bali.
