Fresh fires, bomb blast in Myanmar's Rakhine

Fresh fires, bomb blast in Myanmar's Rakhine

The Turkish president also said there had been constant efforts for covering up the crimes committed by Buddhist mobs against the Rohingya minority Muslims in Myanmar's Rakhine state.

Amid escalating trouble for the immigrated Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, Bangladesh has now banned telecom operators from providing mobile services to the refugees.

The group's statement said the video and related satellite images was "damning evidence" that contradicts Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi's assertions that the military's so-called "clearance operations" ended on September 5.

India has stepped up security along its largely porous eastern border with Bangladesh and is using "chilli and stun grenades" to block the entry of Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence in their homeland, officials said on Friday.

Patrick Murphy, the USA deputy assistant secretary of state for Southeast Asia, speaking Friday in a conference call from Bangkok, said although the US condemns August attacks by Muslim Rohingya militants, the response from Burmese security forces has been "disproportionate". The government says there is no such ethnicity as Rohingya and that they are Bengalis who illegally migrated to Myanmar from Bangladesh.

On Saturday, Myanmar's commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing posted a statement on Facebook saying Rohingya militants planted a "home-made mine" that exploded in between a mosque and madrassa in northern Rakhine's Buthidaung township on Friday.

A total of eight medical professionals working in Bangladesh reported treating 25 women between them since late August who had physical injuries that were consistent with violent attacks.

Muslim refugees seeking shelter in Bangladesh from "unimaginable horrors" in Burma face enormous hardship and risk a dramatic deterioration in circumstances unless aid is stepped up, the head of the United Nations refugee agency said on Monday.

"We will do everything to prevent ethnic cleansing and genocide", the diplomat said. So far almost 436,000 from the stateless Muslim minority have fled to the country from Myanmar.

Bangladesh is keeping a close watch on the refugee influx to make sure Rohingya camps are not targeted by extremist elements for potential recruits, a senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Khaleej Times. India has over 40,000 Rohingya living in the country since a decade, after fleeing persecution in Myanmar.

Experts also feel that the new age gun wielding Rohingyas are more prone to be sucked into terrorism and are likely to pledge alliance with global terror networks, thus exacerbating their already vulnerable state of affairs.

Rohingya community leaders noted that most of the Rakhine villages near the Bangladesh border are now deserted.
