Road closed amid reports of police shooting

Motorists claim several shots have been fired in a police incident on the M5 motorway near Bristol.

A man has died in a police shooting involving a auto near the M5 motorway in the Bristol area, England.

'I saw them back off from a vehicle and then they surrounded it and then they shot with handguns five, six, maybe ten times.

According to Bristol Post reporter Heather Pickstock, who is on the scene, a man was chased off the motorway by police before being shot through the window of his auto. A witness said the police opened fired numerous times at a auto and dragged the man out to resuscitate him.

A man has died following an "incident involving police firearms" on busy A-road in North Somerset, police have confirmed.

The image below, adapted from footage broadcast by Sky News, shows six bullet holes in the vehicle, a red Suzuki Swift.

There are bullet holes in the windows and shards of shattered glass on the tarmac below. Ahead of me were police in the road.

"This has been a fast moving incident and is now under investigation by the Commission", they added.

The A369 Portbury Hundred has now been closed off near the junction and an air ambulance was scrambled.

The IPCC said it was examining "what appears to be a non-police issue firearm" found at the scene and checking for CCTV and body-worn video footage of the incident.

"At this stage we are now investigating the circumstances of the incident and no individual police officer is under investigation".

The incident happened on the A369 off the M5 at around 9.30am.

"IPCC investigators are at the scene gathering evidence and are attending the post-incident procedures".
