Brandis criticises Abbott's 'bizarre' call to ban Macklemore 'gay anthem' at NRL

Brandis criticises Abbott's 'bizarre' call to ban Macklemore 'gay anthem' at NRL

Mr Abbott has backed a petition calling for Macklemore's pro-gay rights song Same Love to be banned from the USA rapper's setlist during Sunday night's half-time entertainment.

Mr Abbott's tweet opposing the song has generated much discussion in Australia, and drawn criticism.

With the same-sex marriage survey now underway in Australia, Macklemore's performance has attracted criticism and praise from both sides of the debate.

Macklemore plans to sing his ARIA chart topping song Same Love as part of his performance at Sunday's decider.

Before his trip Down Under, Macklemore hit back at the complaints.

"I think there was a petition today to ban me from playing", he added.

One of Mr Abbott's party colleagues, Attorney-General George Brandis, called the opposition "bizarre" - noting Same Love was one of Macklemore's biggest hits. "I think there is a petition today to ban me from playing", he told USA radio.

The 34-year-old "Thrift Shop" rapper continued, "It's interesting times in Australia and I'm heading on a flight over there later tonight".

Macklemore is flying to Australia for a one-off performance at Sunday's National Rugby League (NRL) grand final.

The AFL has also encountered blowback for its long-standing support for marriage equality, with commentators and some Coalition MPs upset over a decision to temporarily replace the logo outside its Melbourne headquarters with a "yes" sign.

During a U.S. radio interview, Macklemore responded to the outcry against the performance of the song for the NRL grand final.

Asked by the interviewer if he planned to "go harder" on the issue, Macklemore replied, "I'm gonna go harder".

Speaking on the USA radio show The Cruz Show, Macklemore addressed the incredibly dumb controversy in Australia.

Former rugby player Tony Wall started the petition, arguing that the song was a move to "protect children".

"It's interesting actually "cause I'm gonna play 'Same Love" and they're going through trying to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia", he said during the interview.
