Search Giant Lags Behind in the Race for Smart Home Hardware

Search Giant Lags Behind in the Race for Smart Home Hardware

In addition to the existing Amazon Echo, Amazon Echo Dot, Amazon Echo Show, and Amazon Echo Look, the ecommerce giant announced a newly redesigned Amazon Echo, a new speaker called the Amazon Echo Plus, and a mini screen-equipped device called the Amazon Echo Spot.

According to two confirmed sources to Tech crunch, it says that previously Google was working on products having larger screens competing with full sized televisions, but lately it's more focused on the "Manhattan" device, which is internally code named by Google. Following the surprise debut of the Echo Show, Google's mid-2018 launch date was brought forward to 2017 and the pressure was ramped up a couple of notches. In the meantime, the smart home market has their eyes set on Amazon, which is why Google has a lot to catch up on. Amazon presently can't seem to react to that counter in any way however as things stand at this moment, owners of the Echo Show looking to get to YouTube through their Alexa-powered speaker are out of alternatives.

Though hardware products aren't key to Amazon's bottom line, they serve as important conduits for popularising and expanding the voice-based digital assistant, which is integrated into the latest devices.

Now one of the advantages that Alexa has over the Google Assistant, is the fact that there is a whole section on Amazon's website for products that work with Alexa. For its part, is expected to debut a smaller Home speaker and a pair of upgraded Pixel smartphones on October 4.

Earlier this week Alphabet Inc's (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google suddenly removed YouTube streaming video service from, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Echo Show smart speaker.

Meet Amazon's new Echo devices

It's not just the number of devices that reflect the significance of the announcement.

"Google has chosen to no longer make YouTube available on Echo Show, without explanation and without notification to customers".

"Google pulled YT from Echo Show because it will launch a similar device codenamed Manhattan".

Amazon also launched the Echo Spot, a small circular speaker created to sit on a nightstand or desk. Echo Spot can directly connect to speakers through Bluetooth or using a 3.5mm stereo cable, enabling you to add Alexa to your home entertainment system. My point is that Amazon already has the lead and I truly hope Google takes the time to make a considered and well integrated device.
