Texas defense stands strong in win at Iowa State

Against an Iowa State offense that came in averaging 6.5 yards per play and 41 points per game, they allowed four yards per play and a single touchdown.

In soccer, a team can "park the bus", so to speak, going all in on defense, giving up few open scoring chances, and hoping to spring a counter-attack on the opponent at some point to eke out a less-than-thrilling 1-0 win. But a win on the road in league play is never something to scoff at - especially when you're just four games into Herman's coaching tenure. In their first game under Herman and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando, they got torched in every possible way by Maryland.

For example, the first Longhorn drive looked dead to rights when Sophomore Quarterback Shane Buechele was sacked by JaQuan Bailey at his own 17 yard-line. "When you look at big-picture goals. we want to compete for the Big 12 Championship in the month of November", Herman said.

I know that Iowa State will go back to their traditional helmets a lot more, but I think I speak on behalf of many others who would please ask the Cyclones to wear these as much as possible, please and thank you.

"Iowa State has used various forms of Cyclone marks occasionally in its history". Nine plays later, the Longhorns scored on an 11-yard run by junior Chris Warren III. Buechele made a poor choice that led to an interception, but he was largely accurate, completing 19 of 26 passes against a talented Iowa State secondary. "I thought that they had better plans, and their players executed their plans better than we did". The teams combined for 568 total yards and 37 first downs, which is about one team's total in a typical Big 12 game.

IOWA STATE (2-1, 0-0): The Cyclones are a 44-41 overtime loss to Iowa away from a 3-0 start, opening the season with a 42-24 home victory over Northern Iowa and winning at Akron 41-14 on September 16.

Iowa State will travel to Oklahoma next Saturday, October 7, to battle the Sooners. Texas's Malik Jefferson stuffed Park on a fourth-and-4 at the 50 midway through the fourth quarter.
